Rival Friends: Official Rules
Draft for review. This document is still being reviewed and may change before it becomes final.
Rival Friends is a private, skill-based investing competition played with virtual money on Rival. It is organized by Maoz Chonowitz (the “organizer”, “we”). These rules apply together with the Terms of Service, the Privacy Policy and How Rival works. If they conflict, these rules apply to Rival Friends.
1. The short version
- At most 50 Rival accounts can take part. Each account enters by reserving one spot. Creating a Rival account does not reserve a spot. You may have more than one account; each is a separate entry.
- Reservations close Wednesday, December 16, 2026 at 23:00 Israel time (4:00 PM New York, the U.S. market close). An account that reserves after the competition has started joins it in progress: it starts with $100,000 in virtual cash and a 0% return from the moment it joins, and receives no earlier performance. Spots that are not reserved by then stay unused. There is no waitlist.
- Everyone starts with the same $100,000 of virtual money. The eligible human player with the highest total return at the final market close wins US$300.
- Rival Friends is free to play: there is no entry fee and no subscription. If a paid plan is ever introduced, it will be announced in advance, and no account is charged unless its owner agrees first.
- Rival Friends is played with virtual money. Rival does not buy real securities and does not hold or invest anyone’s money.
- Rival Friends is an official competition run by Rival. It is not one of the Friends tournaments that players create with each other, which have no cash prize.
2. Dates
Rival Friends starts at the US market open on Thursday, October 1, 2026 and ends with the market close on Thursday, December 31, 2026. Starting portfolios can be built from Thursday, October 1, 2026 at the US market open (9:30 a.m. New York time) until the US market close on Thursday, October 1, 2026 (4:00 p.m. New York time): each starting purchase executes immediately at the current market price, and the starting build does not count toward the 10 buys and sells per day. Until that close you may keep changing your portfolio, but every change after your starting build counts toward the 10 buys and sells for that day. An account that builds its starting portfolio later (because it joined after the start, or did not build on the first day) builds it on any US market day of the tournament (not only on the trading days below), while the US market is open, at the current market price; that first build, once per account, likewise does not count toward the 10 buys and sells. A reserved player who builds no starting portfolio takes part with $100,000 in virtual cash. Rankings and returns are measured from the $100,000 start and follow current prices during every US market session. After the start, portfolios can be changed on any day the US stock market is open (Monday to Friday, except market holidays), from that day’s market open through its actual close, and each change executes immediately at the current market price (at most 10 buys and sells per day). Since November 4, 2026 this applies to every running tournament (before that date, the trading days were Mondays and Fridays). Values, returns and rankings follow current prices during every US market session, including days when portfolios cannot be changed; they are current, not final. Official closing values are recorded after every close and decide the final standings. Times follow Rival’s market calendar, described in How Rival works.
3. Who can take part
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must verify your email address before reserving a spot. Verification confirms the address works; it is not identity verification.
- Each account can reserve one spot, and a person may have more than one account. Each account is a separate entry with its own verified email address. Only reserved accounts can take part, and reserving is on a first-come basis until the spots are taken or reservations close.
- The organizer takes part with their own account, under the same rules as every other account, and is eligible for the prize.
- Rival Friends is void where prohibited or restricted by law. You are responsible for making sure you may take part where you live. We cannot pay a prize to a person or country subject to applicable sanctions.
4. How the winner is decided
Ranking is by total return on the $100,000 starting balance, using Rival’s official closing prices and calculations as described in the Terms. The eligible human account ranked first after the final market close wins. Rival AI and any other system competitor can never receive the prize: if Rival AI ranks first, the prize goes to the highest-ranked eligible human account. If two or more eligible accounts tie for first, the prize is split equally between them.
5. The prize, verification and payment
One prize of US$300 in total, paid by PayPal or bank transfer, at the organizer’s choice. We will contact the provisional winner by the email on their Rival account within 7 days after the final close. To claim the prize, the winner must reply within 14 days and give their legal name, country of residence, payment details and any information the law requires. We may check eligibility and fair play before paying. If a winner does not reply in time, is not eligible or breaks these rules, the prize goes to the next eligible account. Once the winner is confirmed, meaning we have checked eligibility and received their payment details, we pay within 14 days. You are responsible for any taxes on the prize.
6. Fair play, changes and contact
We may disqualify anyone who breaks the Terms or these rules, including by using automation, colluding or manipulating results (also across accounts) or exploiting a bug or data error, and we may correct results affected by a clear data or calculation error before the prize is paid. If a data, technical or legal problem makes fair completion impossible, we may pause, extend or end Rival Friends early; if it ends early after it has started, we will award the prize using the standings at the last completed market close. Nothing in Rival Friends is investment advice. Rival Friends is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Meta Platforms, Inc., Facebook or Instagram. By taking part you release Meta, Facebook and Instagram from any liability connected with Rival Friends.
